Week 13
April 25 - 29
Monday, April 25
1) Dug into the Complex sentence - a review for some - new learning for others! From the complex sentence, is is a quick slide into compound-complex sentence structure which we did! I feel most students are understanding. This is a big DEAL for me since writing purposefully is extremely important for an English teacher! Now that the four BASIC styles are covered, we will be digging into ways and techniques of creating more interesting, sophisticated and exciting sentences!
2) Began a review of the expository essay in prep for the Literacy Assessment which MOST of the class will write on Thursday at 12:15 in the classroom. This Literacy Assessment is MANDATORY as Yukon students need this for graduation.
Here is the site for practise should you need:

3. We looked at a practise piece for the Essay response - discussed format of body of essay and students wrote a practise body response.

1. A quick check-in to see of the students are understanding the sentence styles. See below for the handout on this quiz (marks will be taken).
2. Work on transitions - again in prep for the Literacy Assessment writing component!
3. Sentence Combining - this is a favourite activity to entrench the sentence structure knowledge. Initially, it can be challenging but if students bring some play into the activity, I find that this activity is both instructive and fun! See attached below for a copy of the one we will work on TOGETHER!

WOW - so much hard work was done! Students wrote the Literacy Assessment today!
Friday, April 29
Back to regular learning! Some students still haven't written the Option II for the Sentence Identification, so that will start the lesson. Others will continue on with their novels.
1) I want to run through the Sentence Combining exercise that I mentioned for Wednesday's work. Again, this is a tried and true method for increasing understanding and actual skill development.
2) To continue on with the Literary Analysis we will be working with an old favourite "The Metaphor" by Budge Wilson. I have attached an audio version to Friday, April 1st - my oh my time flies! This is also easily accessed on-line, but I will be reading it in class.
