Week 5:                    February 14 - 18
This WEEK STUDENTS & PARENTS will be notified regarding marks and work submitted

Monday, February 14 - Valentine's Day

Lesson: Hear the Words of Others
Words and Power - Listen to Jason Reynolds (see below).  Title your Notes as: Honesty, Joy, and Anti-Racism by Jason Reynolds
I am a BIG fan of Jason Reynolds, an amazing writer who writes for young people and a writer who exists for WORDS.  On this day of loving please listen to this BookTube reveal and write about what comes up for you. I can guarantee there will be MUCH TO THINK ABOUT on this day of love.  Let's consider the value and impact of words upon others.
Title your response: WHAT COMES UP FOR ME as you listen to this.  You are writing notes journal/point form style as you listen!

Tuesday, February 15
I will be handing out your assignments done to date, so I expect there will be a flurry of activity as I will be sending these reports to parents/guardians on Thursday this week.

Lesson - Advice from Pink   - THIS LOOKS LIKE THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO LAND ON THURSDAY!
Listen to the above YouTube video or find it on your music platform or view the hand out below.
Lesson: Everyone gives advice, or so it seems.  We even give ourselves advice, so I am curious as to what advice you would give your 13 year old self. In your Journal/Reflection part of your binder, please add this to your writing.  This is Writing #4.
This is a rather common activity and can be kind of fun or kind of cringy to go back to and read.  I wonder what Pink thinks of her advice to her 13 year old self now!

Lesson: Prepositions
On our way to learning the 4 types of sentence construction, there are a few nuts a bolts to learn before we dig in.
One thing that is integral to the learning of proper sentence construction is PREPOSITIONS.  We need to know what they are, what job they serve and how they impact our understanding of subjects and predicates. This is not difficult work but it does take some work.  Hang on, here we go, and PLEASE stick with me!
Preposition BOOKLET was handed out IN CLASS.  If you didn't get yours, get one as this has so MUCH INFORMATION IN IT!

Wednesday, February 16

Lesson: Prepositions will be reviewed and more closely examined.  This is a continuation from yesterday's lesson.
Again, marks will be handed out and I expect some will be scrambling to get organized
Please check the side board for what's been assigned and what you will be responsible for.
Lesson: the Direct Speech (Quotation marks) usage is still not as well done as it needs to be.  Today will be a review of this process of writing/using direct speech.

Thursday, February 17

-Lesson: Continued to work with Prepositional Phrases, Subject and Predicate understanding - critical information to ensure all students KNOW what kind of sentence(s) they are writing so they can write with complete control and mastery.
This work is found in the booklet which was handed out in class.
I continued to collect and give credit to the students for doing the work assigned in class. I need students to understand that I look at the work and give credit when credit is due.   Not all work assigned is "graded" but the work given is given for real academic reasons.  In-other-words, the work assigned adds to student's understanding of a concept(s).

Friday, February 18

Students were given a So Far; So Good quiz - Let's see how your skill development is Going handout.  While this is not a 'graded' quiz, its quiz format ensures that students take their writing seriously.  I use this information as a measure of understanding.  If I see that a skill is not being understood by a student, this provides me with an opportunity to reach out to that individual in order to reteach the lesson.  Not all students need the reteaching but this is an vital process in English 10.  I believe all students need to be able to competently use these writing skills (sentence construction and convention use).
Lesson: ANNOTATION - Poem "Friendly Advice to a lot of Young  Men" by Charles Bukowski
Individually, students were asked to annotate this poem.  Two handouts were given related to Annotating a Text and Purposeful Annotations.  Annotation is a skill that will serve all of them well in all aspects of their learning (not just English courses).
