Lesson: 4 types of Nouns
common
Proper - we already discussed capitalization of proper nouns and know they signal the SPECIFIC name of someone, some thing or a place.
Abstract - name something that can not be touched.  This type of noun are feelings or concepts.  See below for some practise with abstract nouns

Lesson: Auxiliary Verbs
Had a discussion about how auxiliary verbs/linking verbs work in tandem (often but not always) with action verbs.  Sometimes the auxiliary verb is the only verb in a sentence which can make it difficult for some students to find the verb (predicate) in order to identify a complete sentence.  We are practising identifying auxiliary verbs.  Please look at page 14 in the Preposition booklet that all the students have.  Students choose a few questions to play with.  This was difficult work for some; some are understanding.  This is important prep work leading into the compound sentence as should be reviewed a few times.  Again, some students are still 'getting' it.  The document below provides information on what they are; the work in the booklet provides practise.

Lesson: A discussion about what is 'good' and 'evil'.   Students self-generated words that represent 'good' and 'evil' using the Ying/Yang symbol as an organizer.  Obviously, I have been impacted by the world events occurring now.  Feel this might be a way to get the students excited about some writing/viewing/conversations.  I asked students to generate 20 words on each side of the symbol. See below for a copy of Ying/Yang

Wednesday, March 2

Lessons:  Understanding the Auxiliary verb and the Simple Sentence, Compound Sentence and Annotating skills for close/active reading.
1) Homework check on the Ying/Yang assignment from yesterday
2) Another review of the auxiliary verb from the Preposition booklet.
3) Compound Sentence - see below for the information file
4) Still I Rise - poem by Maya Angelou (this poem is easily accessed on line).  We read together and practised annotating skills which contribute to increased reading comprehension as this is an 'active' process.  There is a chart below which we have been using to increase the students' skill base.
I have also included a very detailed Youtube assessment of a complete annotation of the poem.  As I said detailed, and I don't think the class is ready to do something so in-depth, but at least they can see and get a sense of what annotation involves.  Our annotations will be developing these skills.
I suspect this lesson will be ongoing until at least Thursday, March 3
